Join the Shi-He Liu Lab
We are building a collaborative, rigorous research group at the interface of cancer biology and bioengineering — and we welcome inquiries from motivated scientists at every career stage.
What it's like to work in the lab
The lab is part of the Department of Cell and Cancer Biology within The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences — a department focused on translational and precision-medicine approaches to cancer. Trainees work across molecular and cell biology, bioengineering, and in vivo cancer models, with close mentorship and access to shared institutional core facilities.
Training Philosophy
- Hands-on mentorship with regular one-on-one meetings and lab-wide research discussions.
- Emphasis on rigorous experimental design, reproducibility, and clear scientific communication.
- Support for presenting at departmental seminars and national/international conferences.
- Encouragement to pursue independent fellowship and grant applications as trainees progress.
- A collaborative culture that draws on the resources of the Department of Cell and Cancer Biology and the wider College of Medicine and Life Sciences.
Desired Background
- Genuine interest in cancer biology, extracellular vesicles, or translational drug delivery.
- Prior experience in molecular/cell biology techniques is preferred but not always required — see specific role details below.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to work collaboratively across biology and bioengineering approaches.
- For international applicants: eligibility for the relevant U.S. visa/appointment category (see application instructions).
Positions We Recruit For
Postdoctoral Fellows
We seek postdoctoral fellows with a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in cancer biology, cell biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or a related field, with a strong publication record and interest in extracellular vesicle biology or translational cancer therapeutics.
Current openings: [Information needed]Ph.D. / Graduate Students
Graduate students join through the College of Medicine and Life Sciences biomedical sciences graduate programs. Rotation and admission details are managed by the graduate program, not the lab directly.
Program link: [Information needed]Research Staff
We occasionally recruit laboratory technicians and research associates to support ongoing projects in molecular biology, cell culture, and animal model work.
Current openings: [Information needed]Undergraduate Researchers
Motivated undergraduates (typically University of Toledo students) are welcome to inquire about research experience opportunities, including for-credit research and summer positions.
Application cycle: [Information needed]Visiting Scholars
We welcome inquiries from visiting scholars and international collaborators interested in short- or long-term research stays. Please contact the lab directly to discuss availability and requirements.
Sponsorship details: [Information needed]General Inquiries
If you don't see a role that fits but are excited about our research, we're happy to hear from you — please reach out with your CV and a short note about your interests.
Application Instructions
To apply or inquire about opportunities in the lab, please email the PI directly with:
- A current CV or resume.
